The Roxbury Arts Group announces an upcoming series of workshops that will appeal to a wide range of ages and interests, from digital photography to French cooking to innovative approaches to painting. On Sunday, July 6, from 10 am -3 pm, Jill Cline, noted area felter, will offer a felting workshop for the beginning felter or for those with some experience. The class will teach the basics of felt making and offer some advanced techniques as well. Participants can choose a scarf, a simple hat or bag, or a project idea of their own. $45 plus a materials fee. Bring a bag lunch. In the RAG studio workshop on Vega Mountain Road.
Jill Cline studied graphic design at Pratt Institute. She opened her own design studio in Soho and for many years designed and marketed jewelry, accessories and t-shirts to stores throughout the United States. She has studied felt making with felting pioneers such as Sharon Costello, Jorie Johnson Chad and others. Her line of felted toys, adult wearables, gifts and housewares can be seen at craft shows thoughout the northeast.
David Kenny, Oneonta photographer and conceptual artist will lead a workshop in the work flow and basics of digital photography. This four-session workshop will be held on Thursdays, July 10 and and 31, and August 14 and 28 from 6-8 pm at RAG’s Vega Mountain Road building. Participants should bring their own digital cameras and a notebook and pencil. $65.
David Kenny has been living in upstate New York since 1986 and has been making art for over 20 years, starting as a nature oriented artist working with wood, sticks and rope. He has worked in many mediums including sculpture, painting and photography, and has developed a large body of work in digital mediums.
David owns and operates his own digital arts and education studio; he does work for Hartwick College and the State University of New York.
Roshan Houshmand will offer two unique fine arts workshops on Fridays, July 11, 18, 25 and August 1. The first, Self-Portrait in the Form of an Object will take place from 10 am to 1 pm. Workshop time will be devoted to group discussion and critiques of works in prograess. Students will work independently in a range of mediums with guidance from the instructor. Bring an object that you have a deep personal connection to, something that triggers emotions and memories as a point of departure for your project. 4 sessions, $70.
From 2 -5 pm, Houshmand will lead a workshop in Drawing and Painting from Life. This class will focus on drawing and painting from still life and will enhance observational skills., techniques of measuring, drawing and paint application. Special attention will be placed on relationships of color, line and tone to create a realistic image. All levels welcome. $75. Pencils and drawing paper provided. Bring you own painting supplies.
Roshan Houshmand is an Iranian-American artist who was born in the Philippines. Her MA and MFA are from Rosary College of Illinois Graduate Program in Florence, Italy, (1983, 84) and her BA is from Bennington College in Vermont where she received awards for outstanding work and leadership in the arts (1982). For several years she studied with Julio Alpuy, a preeminent member of the Atelier of Joaquin Torres Garcia, founder of Universal Constructivism. Houshmand’s work is in private collections in Denmark, Spain, UK, Germany, Belgium, Cyprus, Italy, Costa Rica and the United States. She has taught at Penn State University, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Winchester Graduate School of Art and La Massana in Barcelona. Currently she teaches at the State University of New York in Delhi, New York (SUNY Delhi).
And for the piece de resistance, on Saturday, July 12th 12 noon in the Vega Mt. Hall kitchen , Flora Hogman, who was raised in the South of France, will demonstrate the art of making crepes, including the technique of "flipping the crepe" in the pan. The class will also make cherry clafouti and flambeed bananas. Then you get to eat it! $25. Children welcome if accompanied by and adult.
