JOURNALING WITH EV ELLSWORTH: July 1 - August 5, 2008, Tuesdays, 10 a.m. - noon at the Roxbury Arts Group, Vega Mt. Road, Roxbury NY 6 sessions for $60.
Participants agree to write several pages weekly, read selections aloud in class, listen to the work of other class members, and join in discussion of the work and the craft of writing. Those who attend the journal writing workshop may expect to be in a safe, supportive environment to explore the value of their writing. Ellsworth taught English in New Jersey for many years. She has taught writing classes at the Phoenix House in South Kortright as well as several writing classes for Writers in the Mountains. Writers in the Mountains will present a gala reading and fundraiser at the Roxbury Arts Group. The gala reading will include readings from recent works, written in various classes offered by Writers in the Mountains: personal essays, fiction, memoirs and poems. There will be a printed book of this collection offered for sale as well.
Writers who will be presenting their pieces have shown that they are worthy of presenting thought- provoking material often confronting serious issues as well as offering lighter pieces. They have a tremendous ability to write with clarity, strength and beauty. The audience is never disappointed. At the last gala the house was packed!

CRITICS CORNER WITH BARBARA APOIAN August 14 - September 18, 2008, Thursdays 6 - 8 p.m. at the Roxbury Run Village Office. Six sessions for $65.
Critics Corner will follow a theme of emotions and senses as a stimulant for fictional or memoir pieces. Writers may select only one or several of these subjects for their activity in the workshop. Under Barbara Apoian's guidance each piece will be carefully reviewed and critiqued by the rest of the group, offering suggestions for fully realizing the aim and clarity of the writing. Some pieces will be completed over the six weeks, while others will serve as the foundations of short stories or memoirs to be expanded and finished later, but all grounded and energized by the common thread of experience and imagination shared during the workshop.
Barbara has been recognized for her ability to critique workshop members' writing in a scrupulous and helpful manner. She can supply the necessary inspiration for each workshop member to carry out his/her aims as a writer. Barbara has worked as a professional travel writer in both London and New York. She has been a member of Writers in the Mountains for eight years and co - edited "Out of Our Minds" a published , regional writing by WIM members. Pre registration is strongly advised.

Barbara Apoian has performed her "Among My Souvenirs" dramatized readings at the Erph Center and at the Foothills Performing Arts Center 24, Market Street , Oneonta, NY as well as the Renaissance Club of Somerset, New Jersey and she also appeared in Annapolis, Maryland on May 7, 2008. Barbara will present a new version entitled "People and Places" at Foothills on Wednesday, August 17th at 2:00 p.m. Admission fee $15. Barbara is a founding member of Writers in the Mountains. 10 MINUTE PLAYS WITH FRANK CANAVAN August 17 - September 14, 2008
Sundays 10 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Walt Mead Gallery at the Roxbury Arts Group.
Four workshops, 1 reading and full production $75
Anyone interested in dramatic writing or creative writing will find this year's playwright's workshop an exciting and rewarding experience. Only new works will be accepted so come to the first workshop with a bland page and an open mind.
As in prior years, the goal of the first three session of the series will be writing 10 minute plays. The focus of these three sessions will also be on enhancing skills in:
. The fundamentals of dialogue
. Character development
. Building dramatic action
. Scene structure
. The creation of causality and conflict
. Story building, and plot structure.
The three workshops will be followed by a public reading to afford the playwrights the opportunity of hearing their scripts presented to an audience and gain feedback from the audience. The reading is followed by a fourth workshop to discuss audience reaction and editing suggestions to prepare a final draft of the plays.

Critical skills in Fiction: an intensive 2-day workshop with Jennifer Kabot.
Participants will focus on working in groups to develop critical skills in fiction writing from dialogue to character and plot. A short piece of fiction to read and a film to view will be assigned prior to the class. Each participant will submit a piece of fiction no longer than 10 pages in length prior to the class for all to read and be prepared to discuss.
This program was funded in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered in Delaware County by The Roxbury Arts Group and by the A. Lindsay and Olive B. O’ Connor Foundation. Jennifer Kabot works as a journalist. Her writing has appeared in New York Magazine, Wired, Conde Nast Traveler, The Financial Times, Vogue, and The Guardian.while she’s a contributing editor at the architecture and design magazine Metropolis. She got her MFA in creative writing from the University of East Anglia She is currently putting together a short story collection. Advanced registration is a must.
