In contrast to the “hurry up” principles that dominate much of modern society, a trip to the Township of Roxbury in New York’s Catskill Mountains demands that visitors slow their pace. The town’s rural character is on display around every corner and upon each gently sloping mountaintop. The Hamlet of Roxbury has few rivals when it comes idyllic postcard charm. The community’s Main Street is a pleasant mix of historic homes framed by towering trees. The architectural landscape along Roxbury’s principal thoroughfare is little changed since the 19th century.
The Town of Roxbury also includes the Hamlet of Grand Gorge. Aptly named for its location between steep hillsides, Grand Gorge is a combination of business and residential properties, with a scattering of working farms dominating the outskirts of the community. The third distinct section of Roxbury is the pastoral Denver/Vega Valley. Here, a county road winds through a series of residential properties — from historic farmhouses to newer seasonal homes — tucked among the hillsides. The valley’s farming roots are always apparent, as are the awe-inspiring distant mountain vistas.
The renowned Catskills provide a bounty of ways in which nature can be experienced and Roxbury’s offerings are abundant. Outstanding hiking, biking, golf and skiing can all be enjoyed within the township. Roxbury is also a perfect place for folks who prefer the simple pleasure of sitting on a porch and watching the world go by — at a leisurely pace.
With its pleasing blend of unique history and a gorgeous pastoral setting, the Town of Roxbury holds a very special appeal for residents and visitors alike.
so much … more than you think!
