August 29 – October 5
53525 New York 30 (corner of Main and Bridge) Roxbury, NY
Reception for the Artist and Book Signing Friday, August 29, 5-8 pm
The Orphic Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs from legendary rock photographer Bob Gruen. The show will present 46 photographs of rock greats including John Lennon, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, Debbie Harry, The Ramones and more.
Rock Seen at the Orphic will also include a Teenage Bedroom installation (as seen at MoMA). In addition, signed copies of Bob Gruen’s 14th book ROCK SEEN (Abrams 2011), a monograph spanning his long career, will be available at the gallery.
For forty years, Bob Gruen has been documenting the rock scene, capturing now iconic images of The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin, New York Dolls, Blondie, The Ramones, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono among others and continues to work today with current acts Green Day and the Strypes. Bob Gruen says of his career, “Photography has led me to some great experiences and enduring relationships. Blurring the line between work and play, many of the people I met through my work have become friends; some are like family to me.”
Bob Gruen’s career began in 1965, when he shot his first concert photos at the Newport Folk Festival. “I was still a kid and a big Bob Dylan fan.” Bob Gruen recalls, “I talked my way into getting a photo pass so I could be down front. That was when Dylan played electric guitar and claimed rock’n’roll was American folk music and got booed off stage for it. After that I began taking photos a lot.” (Bob Gruen, Interview with Carlo McCormick, The New York Trash)
While shooting freelance work and photo stories for the underground rock magazine “Rock Scene,” Bob photographed local New York City bands “on stage, off stage, at home, at parties, and during time off”. “Many photos I was taking then weren’t used until years later; they weren’t considered to be news at the times, but now they are ‘history’ ” Bob says of his early photographs which document the very beginnings of what would later become a monumental rock scene at the now infamous New York City clubs CBGB and Max’s Kansas City where bands such as the Ramones and Blondie got their start.
Many of Bob Gruen’s iconic photographs began with unassuming introductions that became the catalyst for honest and enduring friendships. A hurried introduction to Ike and Tina Turner outside a concert began a friendship that resulted in Gruen’s first album cover, and later Gruen’s first concert tour.
In 1972, Gruen met John Lennon and Yoko Ono at a benefit concert, and later dropped some prints at their nearby apartment. This simple gesture began a close friendship between Bob Gruen, John Lennon, and Yoko Ono. Throughout the 1970’s Gruen worked as their personal photographer, documenting concerts and press conferences, as well as capturing serene moments between John and Yoko, and the first images of their son, Sean Lennon. In 1974, Gruen suggested photographing John Lennon on top of his New York apartment building, which would later become the hugely iconic image of John Lennon wearing the New York City T-Shirt.
Gruen’s photographs are in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, and have been shown in the Museum of Modern Art’s 2009 exhibition, “Looking at Music: Side 2” and the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s 2009 exhibition, “Who Shot Rock & Roll”. Bob Gruen lives and works in New York City.

To Kill A Mockingbird
This evening’s feature is the 1962 film classic ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ starring Gregory Peck. The film version of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer-prize-winning, semi-autobiographical novel, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ was one of those rare screen adaptations that pleased fans of the book and its author as well. After seeing the film, Lee commented, “I can only say that I am a happy author. They have made my story into a beautiful and moving motion picture. I am very proud and grateful.”Set in Lee’s hometown, Monroeville, Alabama, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ vividly captures a specific time and place when racial unrest was at its peak in the South. Yet despite its controversial nature, the real focus of the story is the relationship between Scout, a tomboyish six-year-old, her older brother, Jem, and their attorney father. Part of the film’s huge appeal is seeing the dramatic events unfold through the innocent eyes of childhood.

July, 4, 2014 Orphic Gallery will celebrate the opening of Instrumental Desire: Strings Attached
On the Fourth of July from 5 to 7 pm The Orphic Gallery in Roxbury will celebrate the opening of Instrumental Desire: Strings Attached, an exhibit by Brooklyn artist Ken Butler.
Ken is an artist and musician whose hybrid musical instruments, performances, installations, and other works explore the interaction and transformation of common and uncommon objects, altered images, sounds and silence.
In Instrumental Desire: Strings Attached, he will exhibit a violin made from a hatchet, a guitar made with a turntable, a cello fashioned from a metal detector, and a piano constructed with Styrofoam shipping components, and along with other eccentric instruments, drawings and collages.
Created primarily from urban detritus, the hybrid instruments express a poetic spirit of re-invention and hyper-utility as hidden meanings and associations momentarily create a striking and re-animated cultural identity for common objects. String instruments become body, tool, weapon, toy, symbol, machine, phallus, creature, sculpture, icon, and voice. Pianos and keyboards become cybernetic and symbolic architecture. Anxious objects speak in tongues.
Ken Butler’s hybrid musical instrument sculptures, collage/drawings, performances, and audio-visual installations explore the interaction and transformation of common and uncommon objects, sounds and silence, and altered images as function and form collide in the intersections of art and music.

His works have been featured in numerous exhibitions and performances throughout the USA, Canada, and Europe including The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Mass MoCA, and The Kitchen, The Brooklyn Museum, The Queens Museum, Lincoln Center and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City as well as in South America, Thailand, and Japan. Catherine Sebastian and Lenny Kislin at the Orphic Gallery – June 7th Reception
You are cordially invited to The Orphic Gallery in Roxbury, NY on Saturday, June 7th from 5 to 7 pm for an artists’ reception celebrating its first exhibit for the Summer of 2014 – Images & Objects, Stories & Sounds featuring sculpture by Lenny Kislin and photographs by Catherine Sebastian. Both Catherine and Lenny will be in attendance this gala evening, and Lenny will give a demonstration of his sonic sculptures. The exhibit will run from May 24th through June 29th and be open to the public during the gallery’s normal business hours, Thursday through Saturday 12-5 pm, Sunday, 12-3 pm, and by appointment. The Orphic Gallery is located at the Roxbury Corner Store at 53525 State Highway 30, Roxbury, NY, at the corner of Main and Bridge Streets.
Lenny creates sculpture from antique rarities and oddities transforming them into intriguing assemblage pieces. For this exhibit, Lenny has chosen a variety of his musically inspired works, some that function as musical instruments and others that suggest evocative narratives. Catherine will exhibit a selection of music photography from her time in California and New York. She will show portraits, concert photos, and intimate behind the scenes shots including pictures of Levon Helm, Muddy Waters, Taj Mahal, John Sebastian, Pete Seeger, and Richie Havens.
Catherine Sebastian
Catherine Sebastian’s mother was a painter, which no doubt contributed to her daughter’s exceptional eye for what makes an outstanding photograph. Catherine has been taking pictures since she was a Los Angeles teenager. She studied darkroom and printing technique with the legendary teacher Kirk Kirkpatrick. “Like every other person who picks up a camera I had a lot to learn about light and shadow and how to lay them down on film. I immediately felt this was for me, the excitement of interpreting the visual world,” she said. “What I learned in those classes and exercises still informs how I think about capturing what I see. Light is the medium. It is the brush and also at the heart of emotional import.” Sebastian was a charter member of the Soho West Gallery, in the early 1970s and contributed several of her series of prints –hand-tinted double-exposures depicting Los Angeles– for a collective show.
Long known for her photographs of the musicians who were part of her life after her marriage to the Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian. A Woodstock, NY resident for decades, Sebastian produced album cover work for Levon Helm and the RCO Allstars- with Booker T, Duck Dunne, Fred Carter, Jr, Mac Rebbenack and Steve Cropper- covers for Leo Sayer, Music from Mud Acres, and Eye to Eye, a collaboration of blues greats including Pinetop Perkins, Calvin “Fuzz” Jones and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, and, back in Los Angeles, in the early 1980’s she took iconic photographs of a number of New Wave artists including the Textones, the Plimsouls and Doug Feiger as well as for solo projects by Peter Case, Doug Jack Lee and Kathy Valentine. “I have a shot from that period — a telephone pole on Sunset, outside the Whisky, and every single photo and poster stapled on it was my work,” she remembers with a laugh.
She has had work published in The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, Chronogram, ROLL, Blues Revue, LA Connection, BAM, Fine Art magazine and Trouser Press. A cover portrait of Levon Helm was recently voted by Chronogram’s reader’s their favorite cover in the twenty year history of the venerable magazine’s wonderful covers. “That honor had more than a little to do with it being Levon, as well as a great shot” says Catherine.”
Lenny Kislin
Lenny Kislin combines his eye for rarity, his razor-sharp wit and pithy sense of humor to create truly individual one-of-a-kind pieces. Limiting himself to using only the pieces he has in front of him, a veritable treasure trove of antique miscellaneous items, the artist produces three-dimensional wall sculptures and stand-alone sculptures. Kislin considers his work to be collaboration with artists from the past: “I express myself through my respect and creativity for the pieces, made by many different souls, many years ago. I pay homage to the early artisans whose work I am offering-up to new eyes,” states Kislin.
His work ranges from sardonic to irreverent. He often uses playful juxtaposition and whimsical titles, but his work is far from limited to making people laugh. Cool Cats is one of several Kislin works which takes a pointed look at the history of race relations using blackface folk art, pieces which may have been derogatory in the way they were rendered, creating fresh commentary on the past.
“I regard the hunting and choosing of material to be a primary part of my art. My palette is limited to objects I can find in my hunting,” he explains. He chooses objects that are both aesthetically and spiritually thrilling, creating fresh perspectives on the past for modern generations.
Through his childlike wonder at the power of found objects, Kislin has become a recognized and highly patronized artist. His first piece ever, titled Suicide, was made up of an 18th century carpenter’s traveler and an old bowling ball. It was purchased by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Hawaii. Alan Stillman, CEO of Smith and Wollensky Steakhouses is a prominent collector who displays the pieces across the country. Gloria Vanderbilt purchased Kislin’s art work for her personal collection and he has received innumerable “Best in Show” awards from respected art organizations. Kislin was chairman of the Woodstock Artists Association from 1996 to 2002, and has curated over 75 art shows in the Ulster County area of New York and continues to do so.
