The Roxbury Arts Group Celebrates Its 36th Anniversary!
2015 Season is Announced and Includes Salsa, Noir-Indie-Pop, Classical and more!
Performances, Exhibits, Workshops, Youth Camps
The snow is melting, the mountains are alive with the songs of spring birds and the Roxbury Arts Group is bursting with news about their upcoming 36th season, starting in May! The roster of performances, events and workshops is designed for all ages to enjoy and includes an 11- piece Salsa Band, an Evening of Dance, a Folk & Roots based outdoor music series, the very popular Essential Thursdays series, the return of the Villalobos Brothers, a classical quintet playing Mozart to Radiohead, a Noir-Indie-Pop band with accordion, horns, drum and an ukulele and much much more! For full season details and tickets, visit the Roxbury Arts Group website at www.roxburyartsgroup.org. or call 607.326.7908.
Opening the 2015 summer performance season on May 23rd is the electrifying 11-piece Salsa Band – Orquesta SCC at the Roxbury Arts Center! Be prepared to have every cell in your body dancing, even if you never leave your seat. The bands album ‘Renacimiento’ topped the Latin charts and won best salsa album multiple times around the world. Plan to come early for the free salsa dance lesson and then let the music do the rest.
Contemporary dance takes center stage at the June 13th performance at the Roxbury Arts Center featuring sheer beauty in motion when Blakeley White-McGuire, currently Principal Dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company in New York City, takes the stage. White-McGuire is joined this year by dancers and twin sisters Hsiao-Wei and Hsiao-Ting, and award-winning cellist Nan-Cheng Chen.
The very popular Essential Thursdays series returns to the Old School Baptist Church in the idyllic Denver-Vega Valley, boasting a roster of some of the world’s finest classical musicians. Violins and a cello will play Mozart, Beethoven and Piazzolla Tangos on July 9 and selections from American classical composers Gershwin, Copland and Porter will fill the air with the resonances of an oboe and trombone duo on July 30. This exquisite performance series closes on August 20 when a clarinet, violin and cello bringing clarity to the end of the series through the stylings of Neo-Classical composers such as Stravinsky and Ingolf Dahl. Come early and enjoy a bite to eat before entering the Old School Baptist Church, the venue the Roxbury Arts Group shamelessly claims to be ‘the best little acoustic house this side of the Susquehanna!’
For those hot summer nights, pack a cooler, grab the kids and friends and come on down to the new gazebo in Stamford’s Veteran’s Memorial Park for an early evening outdoor concert series. It’s all Roots, Folk Americana and Country music featuring regional performers Sara Milonovich & Greg Anderson on June 14, immediately following the Flag Day Parade. Jeff Wilkinson & The Shutterdogs will perform on July 23, and this outdoor summer concert series closes on August 13 when Country Express plans to have everyone dancing in the square.
As the summer sizzles on, July 25th marks the return of the ‘Contemporary High-Octane Mexican Fiddling’ group, the Villalobos Brothers! L.A. Noir-Indie-Pop Band with accordion, horns, drums and ukulele, The Leftover Cuties arrive September 19th. And on Sunday, October 11th, FIDDLERS! 22 will this year celebrate in memoriam Hilt Kelly. Honoring the renowned Catskill region’s legendary fiddler and caller, FIDDLERS! 22 roster of entertainers includes The Tremperskill Boys, Laura Kortright and Steve Jacobi, Brittany Haas & Nic Gareiss, Linsey Beckett and more.
Community favorites, For Arts’ Sake and The Follies, both return, as does the Holiday Local Arts Market which features many of the region’s greatest artisans. Writers’ Evening, continues every 3rd Monday at the Stamford Village Library and Youth Dance Classes for age groups 4 through 12, offers Ballet and Plié & Play on Thursdays, at the Stamford Central School. The Haunted House returns to the Delaware Inn in October, and the Roxbury Arts Group will be looking for ghoulies and spooky folk to help make a haunting!
Art classes are planned throughout the year and for details and updates, please refer to roxburyartsgroup.org. The next class being offered is a two-day monoprint workshop on May 30th & 31st, instructed by artist Lisbeth Firmin, with assistance from fellow artist Helene Manzo. Scheduled for the Exhibition Series in the Walt Meade Gallery this year, exhibits include the current show “Large Works; followed by Lisbeth Firmin: Working the Light opening May 2nd; an exhibit focusing on the art of the Harvest opens August 1st; between October 16th through the 18th, a retrospective show titled “Walt Meade: 100 Years” will include an opening reception and a slide show; and on November 7th the exhibition “Small Works” will fill the gallery walls.
And summer is not summer without camp for the kids! For ages 8 through 13, the very popular Rock n’ Pop Theater Camp returns for its 6th summer of theater, writing, acting, performing and of course, singing! Youth educator / director Malissa Kano-White returns to direct campers through a week of training and rehearsals culminating in a musical written specifically for them and an encore concert performance.
“We are bubbling over in excitement with this year’s season” says Jenny Rosenzweig, Executive Director of the Roxbury Arts Group. “We know our audience will have a multitude of events and performances to their liking to choose from, but knowing we have a high level of excellence in all our programming we are hoping that they will be inspired to also experience performances and workshops which they normally would not choose to attend. This would be such a great validation to the Roxbury Arts Group’s mission of ‘bringing the arts to the community’,” sited Rosenzweig.

The idea of ‘Large Works’ first came about through brain-storming led by Elaine Grandy and Ros Welchman during a Gallery Committee Meeting. Grandy and Welchman are currently active on the board of directors for the Roxbury Arts Group and are both established and respected artists themselves. “We were excited about the possibilities ‘Large Works’ offered artists, allowing them to ‘go big’. We had no idea what to expect and were overwhelmed by the artists’ responses to this challenge”, said Jenny Rosenzweig, Executive Director for the Roxbury Arts Group. Rosenzweig added, “Every time a large piece came in for the installation, the excitement level rose. Each piece is magnificent and together they make an awe-inspiring show.”
The art pieces represented in ‘Large Works’ utilize many mediums and genres by means of paintings, murals, fabric sculptures and more. Local and regional artists represented in this grand-scaled show include: Nancy Barton, Beth Caspar, Adam Cohen, Louis D’Amico, Ann Dubois, Fred Duignan, Tabitha Gilmore-Barnes, Robert Gould, Samuel Guy, Kate Hamilton, Laura King, Helene Manzo, Dana Matthews, Gary Mayer, Nat Thomas, Gerda vanLeeuwen, Corneel Verlaan, Beatrice Wolert, and Peter Yamaoka. ‘Large Works’ will be on exhibit from March 7 through April 18, 2015.

This year, on Valentines Day weekend Margaretville and Roxbury are offering a host of activities for lovers, families, and friends. Each year many people exchange cards, gifts, candy or flowers with their “special” friend. But what if you could create your own card, have a love poem written just for you, send your own love letter, create a homemade gift, take a romantic ride on a horse drawn surrey and still get fabulous discounts from area businesses? Well, this year it is all possible…and it starts with heart shaped guitar picks. What? Well, here is how it goes….beginning on February 7th if you shop or eat at any of the participating businesses in Margaretville or Roxbury (see related ad), you will receive a “Spread the Love” heart shaped guitar pick to be redeemed during Valentine’s weekend. You can then take the pick to any participating business in Margaretville or Roxbury from Friday Feb. 13 – Monday Feb. 16 and redeem it for a special discount. You’ll receive a new pick each time you make a purchase so you can continue to “Spread the Love”!
Love will be in the air on Valentine’s Weekend as Margaretville celebrates “Sweet on Main” from 11am – 4pm on Saturday, February 14th. Just like the popular “Holiday on Main” event held in November there will be heaps of free activities for kids. Join the artists of the Catskill Artisans Guild from 11-3 as they help children create beautiful Valentines. While there you can also sample chocolates by local candy maker Raelene Bond of Catskill Candy & Confections. Then hop on over to Home Goods between 11-1 where you can sample tea and candy by local food crafters Traveler’s Tea and Girl & Bee. Margaretville Liquor Store will be hosting their ever popular tasting event with wines on the docket. Pop in at 768 Main and meet local cheese maker Cyndi Wright of Dirty Girl goat farm. Sample some cheese and check out the locally made jewelry and gifts! Head over to Mountain Yarns and learn the art of making a traditional woven paper heart. Cupid’s Crafts will be all the buzz in the Masonic Hall Building from 11-3. Don’t forget to stop in at 816 Main Street where the Watershed Post staff will help you create a Laughable Love Letter and the Open Eye Theater will have an awesome photo prop stop. Bring your cell phones charged and read to snap photos as there will be many Silly Selfie Stations all over town!
Then on Sunday, the 15th, Roxbury becomes the destination for anyone who wants to share the love. You can start by redeeming your guitar picks at Cassies or the East Branch Café and then beginning at 11:00 am – 1:00 pm you can head over to the Arts Group for the “I Love you to Pieces” kid’s crafts led by RAG Executive Director (and mom) Jenny Rosenzweig. Roxbury General is also offering tastes from their pantry to warm the heart and soul —a soup, a sauce and a pepper jelly. At 1pm, the elegant red velvet lined horse drawn surrey returns to the historic hamlet with rides being offered from 1:00-4:00 pm and if that’s not romantic enough you can enhance your ride by upgrading to the romance package which includes an individualized love poem, a special photo, and bottle of Prosecco and home made chocolates for the ride (reservations required—call 607 326 3392 for details). But you don’t have to ride the surrey to get a love poem or a photo. Poems are also available from 1:00-3:00p at the Roxbury Arts Center. Poets Esther de Jong and Becca Hamilton are on hand to write you your very own personalized short poems and haikus. Jill Ribich of Catskill Images will have her photo booth open and you can walk away with a fun, personalized photo for $5. From 2pm-4pm, get spirited at Roxbury Wines and Spirits with a tasting featuring Prohibition Distillery’s Bootlegger Vodka, Gin and Bourbon. Wine tasting is to be hosted by Empire Merchants North. Queens Mountain Café will be opened and also offering guitar pick discounts. While you’re in Roxbury be sure to head over the mountain to Lyon Mountain Blue Barn Antiques which will be having a sale all weekend. At 4pm, the pop up café opens at the Roxbury Arts Center with music by “Three Friends” 2 accordions and a “second” fiddle will play standards and your favorites in Walt Meade Gallery. Café goers can order from Roxbury’s Ate O Ate Food truck who will be parked right outside and offering everything from light snacks to tapas to full meals—and yes, table service too! Be sure to bring along the beverage of your choice and sit and enjoy the music. Looking for something more intimate, perhaps a table for two at the Public Lounge is your best bet. Public will be offering their usual scrumptious fare and don’t forget your guitar picks… and share the love.

Waiting for Guffman
This evening’s movie feature is ‘Waiting for Guffman’.Directed by, co-written by and starring David Guest, ‘Waiting for Guffman’ is a mockumentary of an aspiring director and the marginally talented amateur cast of a hokey small-town Missouri musical production go overboard when they learn that someone from Broadway will be in attendance.

To Kill A Mockingbird
This evening’s feature is the 1962 film classic ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ starring Gregory Peck. The film version of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer-prize-winning, semi-autobiographical novel, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ was one of those rare screen adaptations that pleased fans of the book and its author as well. After seeing the film, Lee commented, “I can only say that I am a happy author. They have made my story into a beautiful and moving motion picture. I am very proud and grateful.”Set in Lee’s hometown, Monroeville, Alabama, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ vividly captures a specific time and place when racial unrest was at its peak in the South. Yet despite its controversial nature, the real focus of the story is the relationship between Scout, a tomboyish six-year-old, her older brother, Jem, and their attorney father. Part of the film’s huge appeal is seeing the dramatic events unfold through the innocent eyes of childhood.
